In addition to Armenia and Russia, I also traveled from Yerevan to Tblisi (Georgia) for two days in May with the help of the US Consulate in both cities. On May 15th, I gave an afternoon Jazz lecture/performance for a warm, inquisitive gathering of students and faculty at the Tblisi State Conservatory [fig 49, 50], and in the evening a solo piano recital and official reception for 70 cultural and political dignitaries in the home of the recently installed ambassador, Hon. Richard Miles, and his wife Sharon [fig 51, 52]. In Tblisi, I also paid my respects to the memorial of the celebrated Armenian composer Sayat Nova whose inscription plaque, set in the wall of St. Gregory's Church, is a landmark for lovers of Armenian Folk Music [fig 53]. While brief, my visit to Tblisi left me with a friendly impression and a keen desire to return. |
